Why Does the Sun Shine? is the first TMBG release to be recorded with a full band, signaling what would later come with John Henry; something that many fans consider to be the end of an era.
This EP is almost entirely composed of remakes, which means I don't really have a lot that I can say.
Why Does The Sun Shine? is a remake of a song by Hy Zaret and Lou Singer. It's kind of a precursor to the kind of edutainment stuff TMBG would do with the kids albums later on. I find it fun that it's something like a military march; there's something to be said there, about the intertwining of the military-industrial complex with science.
Jessica is a cover of a The Allman Brothers Band song that was recorded after the death of Duane Allman. It's a good cover.
Whirlpool is a remake of a Meat Puppets song. I adore Whirlpool's usage of horns, and its kind of whimsical, somewhat hopeful lyricism.
Spy is Spy. I prefer the version on John Henry.
